LEGACY CASE STUDY: LILIA

We recently completed a series of legacy case studies, delving into the long-term impact of PLACED’s early outreach and Academy programmes. These case studies involve participants who engaged with PLACED during the initial outreach efforts and early development of PLACED Academy and have since gone on to be highly successful within the built environment in their own right. We’re proud to have played a small part in their journey. These early outreach and Academy experiences fostered significant engagement and growth, laying the groundwork for the expanded Academy programmes as they exist today.

Legacy Case Study with Lilia Hakem, Geography Honours Graduate and PLACED Academy Alumni.

What year did you participate in PLACED Academy?

I took part in 2020, during the September to December programme. It was the first one delivered remotely because of COVID, which made it possible for me to take part since I’m based in Manchester. The programme was focused on urban planning.

What were your interests or career aspirations before participating in the PLACED Academy?

At the time, I was 16 and really interested in architecture. I wanted to learn more about how to get into university and the routes available, as well as to understand how buildings and cities work in practice.

How did you first hear about PLACED and what motivated you to get involved?

I heard about PLACED through my school teacher, who knew I was interested in architecture. She’d seen information about the Academy and passed it on to me. At that time, I was considering a degree apprenticeship, but through the programme I realised architecture might feel too narrow too early on, and that I had broader interests. That influenced me to choose geography at university instead.

What were your initial expectations of the programme?

I expected it to be very technical. I thought I’d be doing precise measurements and drawings with all the pens, pads and resources provided. But it turned out to be much more relaxed, creative, and collaborative. It became a space where I could ask lots of questions and explore ideas in a fun way.

Can you describe your most memorable experience during the programme with PLACED?

The final presentation was the most memorable. After eight weeks of group work, we presented our proposals to Liverpool City Council. It felt amazing to present something at that scale to real professionals, and it was the first time I truly felt my voice had space in a room full of adults.

What were the most valuable skills or knowledge you gained from the programme?

Industry knowledge was the most valuable thing I gained. I wanted to understand what urban planning really was, and by the end, I had a much clearer idea. It also helped me discover my likes and dislikes, which is fundamental for young people deciding on their future.

Did the programme change your perception of the built environment or related professions? If so, how?

Yes, the programme made the sector feel much less intimidating. I got to know Jo and India, and having approachable contacts made it feel like a safe space. Instead of being overwhelmed by vague ideas about careers, I had clarity about what certain roles involved, and it felt like a welcoming community.

Were there any particular individuals (mentors, staff, other participants) who significantly influenced your experience?

Yes, Jo Harrap and India Morgan, who co-led the programme. They were welcoming, supportive, and made a big impression. Because of their encouragement, I felt comfortable signing up for further Alumni opportunities, such as speaking at the ‘Common Good’ event in 2022. Those opportunities have helped me grow significantly in confidence and skills.

Did your involvement with PLACED influence your educational choices?

Definitely. Originally, I wanted to pursue architecture, but PLACED helped me realise my interests were broader. I chose to study geography at university instead, which gave me space to explore. Through that, I discovered real estate and interior design, and I now understand how these areas link together within the built environment. I wouldn’t have had that depth of understanding without PLACED.

Can you provide a specific example of how the skills or experiences from PLACED have been beneficial in your education or early career?

Through Alumni opportunities, I’ve developed soft skills like public speaking and confidence. I’ve learned how to use those skills to share experiences, influence others, and contribute to social impact. It has also given me proof that I can excel in these areas, which has boosted my confidence in education and career planning.

To what extent, if any, did PLACED’s outreach programme contribute to your professional development and success?

Although I’m still early in my career, PLACED has already provided opportunities that have shaped my development. From mentorship to volunteering at events, these experiences have built my skills and expanded my professional network.

Did your participation in the programme have any impact on your personal development?

Yes, it significantly increased my confidence. It has also given me direction. I now feel much more certain about pursuing real estate and affordability, and how to design better places. Without PLACED, I wouldn’t have felt confident enough to explore this path.

Do you feel that PLACED Academy has a broader positive impact on the community?

Definitely. PLACED Academy gives young people a voice and inspires them to see that they can shape their cities and communities. It shows that if you care about your community, you can make a difference. That was certainly how I felt as a participant.

Can you explain if/how you have maintained connections with PLACED or other participants since completing the programme?

Yes. I’ve stayed involved through Alumni opportunities and events, including UKREiiF. I even made a close friend, Eve, through PLACED, and we now support each other in projects and career development. Having those connections has made professional spaces feel less daunting.

What advice would you give to somebody considering participating in the PLACED Academy programmes?

Just go for it. Even if you’re not sure it’s for you, it’s a valuable opportunity. You’ll learn about the sector, gain skills, and discover what you do and don’t enjoy. All while having fun. It’s a win-win.

How would you summarise the overall impact of PLACED Academy on your life and career?

It’s been incredibly positive. Taking part at 16 gave me career clarity, skills, and opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. PLACED has helped me stay true to what I genuinely care about, making a difference in the built environment, and I feel inspired and supported on that journey.
